Are you burnt out?

Burnout is one of those things that high achievers should always look out for, but rarely do because of their “I can do anything” attitude. Because these high achievers are so passionate about what they are doing, they fail to notice that they are working exceptionally long hours, while putting enormous pressure on themselves to excel in their career, family life and personal goals.

Burnout is a state of long-term stress that leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, detachment and feelings of lack of accomplishment. When someone is in the full depths of burnout they are no longer able to function personally or professionally.

However, symptoms of burnout do not occur suddenly. The person does not wake up one morning and suddenly cannot function. Symptoms develop slowly and over time, which makes it harder to recognise.

Signs of burnout are:

  1. Chronic fatigue
  2. Insomnia
  3. Forgetfulness and lack of concentration
  4. Physical symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath and heart palpitations
  5. Increased illness/sickness
  6. Loss of appetite
  7. Anxiety
  8. Depression
  9. Anger
  10. Loss of enjoyment
  11. Isolation
  12. Pessimism
  13. Irritability
  14. Lack of productivity
  15. Feelings of apathy

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please take a minute to reflect to see if you could be experiencing burnout. Take some time to rest and learn to just say no. Remember that you are only human and you are allowed to be tired and you do not have to please everyone.
